Underoath Rock South Africa

Brettian Productions recently had the privilege of being involved with Underoath’s Lost in the Sound of Separation tour. The heavy rock / experimental band, who has sold over 1 million albums, was brought out by Authentic Ideas and performed a whirlwind 5 shows in 3 provinces. Underoath was thrilled to see the following they have in South Africa. Drummer and vocalist, Aaron Gillespie said that the band did not know what to expect when they were told they would be visiting SA. Straatligkinders and Crossing Point were just 2 of the exciting local bands invited to open for Underoath.

Many people who are not familiar with the Christian Rock / Punk / Metal scene generally tend to take one look at the band and question how such an image can preach to the youth. The answer is simple; Underoath is relevant to “metal heads” and openly proclaim that they exist purely to serve Christ alone. If the youth are going to listen to heavy rock, let’s give it to them with the gospel. When asked how they respond to criticism about the vocal techniques they use, keyboard player Christopher Dudley laughed, “The bible says we should shout to the Lord.” How can we fault that logic?

It is often thought that a band that has enjoyed success on such a large scale, (their video for Writing on the Walls was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2006) would be unapproachable and arrogant. This could not be further from the truth! Conversation flowed easily between the band members and everyone they came into contact with. Over a seafood dinner, we discussed everything from family to life in the States, favourite moments on tour to future plans for the band.

SA fans can look forward to Underoath returning soon… watch this space!
